How It All Started

Italy. 2007. My best friend could barely catch her breath over the phone. I listened to her with my little Nokia cell glued to my ear. She was calling from the big city of Genoa, while I sat in my bedroom in Cascinagrossa, a town of 250 people up in Piedmont. Her voice spiked with excitement telling about how she had been out all night at the discoteca with the students from the international high school. International high school? Who were these people from all over, making their lives abroad? This was when it all started.

The seed of expat life fizzled through the air that day and nestled into the wrinkles of my brain. I was studying abroad while in high school and knew that I would have to return to the U.S. at the end of the year. I watered that seed and nurtured my life as an expat as it came into form. Now, thirteen years on, having called five countries home, I am here to share a glimpse into the life that I’m so proud of.
